The xdg-user-dirs-update.service user unit (shipped enabled by the xdg-user-dirs package) rewrites ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs on login, clobbering the tracked short-path variant (docs/dl/pics/vids). Mask it by symlinking to /dev/null.
